KARACHI:The University of Karachi and the Global Neighborhood for Media Innovation Thursday inked a memorandum of understanding to create a media club to promote positive values through media focused activities.
According to the MoU, the collaboration will provide students on-campus access to intellectually stimulating activities including technical training, mentorship sessions, development of media projects, and panel discussions.
The President GNMI Najia Ashar mentioned that their platform aimed to bridge the gap between media, civil society, and diverse communities by promoting nationwide access to media literacy, research, policymaking, and advocacy through intellectual and digital engagement.
She said that the GNMI also focused on promoting freedom of expression, human rights, democratic processes, accountability, digital rights, gender equality, women empowerment, and tolerance in the communities through objective journalism and media innovation.
As per the MoU, a minimum of 40 students (20 male and 20 female students) in two batches of 20 students each and two faculty members in media focused activities would be part of this initiative while at least 10 virtual training sessions will be held with the university students, where participants will be trained on digital storytelling and writing, basic digital production and editing, and news dissemination on digital platform with the themes of peace building, harmony, and promotion of pluralistic narratives.
To promote students’ work, and for the sustainability of the media club beyond the project life, two Mobile Journalism Kits (Mojo Kits) will be provided to the students as well as their projects would be put on display on various platforms.
The Vice Chancellor University of Karachi Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi said that students had the potential to bring changes in society.
He observed that if youngsters get proper training along with quality education they could make a lot of positive changes in the country and varsities had to provide all available resources to them so that they could play their role.
