RAWALPINDI: The 9th Muharram procession was taken out from Fatmia Chattian Hattian and culminated after passing through traditional routes at Imambargah Colonel Maqbool Hussain here on Saturday.
Police made ample security arrangements cordoning off the entire route of the procession. The area was in complete lockdown with major roads blocked with containers and many streets cut off with concrete blocks and barbed wire.
As many as 3000 armed policemen, Rangers, Punjab Constabulary and elite force were deployed in Rawalpindi to give security cover to the Muharram procession.
No one was allowed to stand on rooftops of commercial and residential buildings situated along the routes of mourning processions and carrying the weapons.
CCTV cameras and walk through gates was installed and aerial surveillance of mourning processions was made to ensure foolproof security. Police along with Rangers kept strict watch on the movement of the procession.
A control room was set up in the Rawal Town Municipal Administration building to monitor the security situation along the procession routes.
The City Traffic Police (CTP) also made fool proof traffic plan and there was complete ban on parking of all kind of vehicles or handcarts on the route of the Muharram procession, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Yousaf Ali Shahid said.
The “sabeels” of water and milk, including “langar”, was arranged for the mourners.
