Chairman district press club shot dead

HAFIZABAD: Chairman District Press Club Hafizabad Mohammad Yaqoob Shahzad was shot at and killed by unknown persons here on Sunday.

According to police, Mohammad Yaqoob Shahzad, correspondent of Express Media Group was sitting in a motorcycles showroom adjacent to Bus Stand when someone called him outside by cell phone.

As he came out, unidentified persons holding 9MM pistol shot at him in the chest. He ran inside the showroom where the accused followed him and fired a volley of shots at him.

Yaqoob Shahzad received critical wounds and died on the spot. He left behind a widow and four minor children.

SHO City Khurram Gull, DSP Saddar and DPO Mohammad Zubair Dareshak constituted special teams to arrest the accused.

On the report of his brother Mohammad Farooq, a case has been registered in the city police station.

Later, a protest demonstration was taken out from the DHQ Hospital. The protesters also staged sit-in in Fawara Chowk and railway gates on Gujranwala Road and blocked traffic for several hours in protest. They were demanding immediate arrest of culprits.

On information, DPO reached the railway gates and assured the protesters that accused would be arrested at the earliest. On his assurance the journalists called off sit-in.

Meanwhile, Saira Afzal Tarar Minister of State for Health Services, Regulation and Coordination and Provincial Labour Minister Raja Ashfaq Sarwar, DCO Mohammad Usman have strongly condemned the murder and directed the police to arrest the accused promptly.

The PFUJ has also strongly condemned the murder and demanded early arrest of the accused.

After autopsy the body was handed over to his brother.

He was laid to rest in the railway lines graveyard in the evening.

The funeral was attended by large number of journalists, lawyers, traders, social, political and religious workers.

The Chief Minister of Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif has taken serious notice of the murder and directed the DCO and DPO to ensure early arrest of the accused.
