RAWALPINDI: Realizing the importance of soil and water conservation, the department of Soil Science & Soil and Water Conservation (SS&SWC) of Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR), has been upgraded to the Institute of Soil Science here on Wednesday.
The Institute was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor PMAS-AAUR Prof. Dr. Rai Niaz Ahmad while Deans, Directors, faculty members and students were also present on the occasion.
Chairman of the Department, Prof. Dr. Khalid Saifullah Khan in his welcome address briefed about the history of the Department and emphasized need of its up-gradation into the Institute.
Prof. Dr. Rai Niaz Ahmad addressing the participants highlighted the importance of efficient use of farm inputs and urged the soil scientists to play leading role in conservation of land and water resources.
He said that agricultural productivity profoundly depends on the soil health, therefore, it is very important to protect the natural resources and stressed the need to adopt latest agricultural practices to boost production in order to feed the increasing population.
The VC highlighted the objectives of the up-gradation of the department as institute and said that this institute would not only educate undergraduate and graduate students but would also help to solve the problems related to soil & water conservation, soil fertility and sustainable productivity in a more efficient manner.
