Pakistani poet gets Japan Royal medal

MULTAN: A noted Pakistani poet and intellectual from Multan, Dr. Mohammad Amin has been honoured with the Japanese Royal Medal ‘The Order of the Rising Sun’ by the Japan Emperor for his services for Japanese literature and language.

Dr. Mohammad Amin had served as head of Philosophy department of Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) Multan and as principal of Wilayat Hussain Islamia College Multan.

He is the author of 35 poetry and prose compilations published in the form of books in Urdu and Punjabi languages.

Dr. Amin, while talking to reporter telephonically from Islamabad, said that he received the medal during a graceful ceremony from the Japanese ambassador on Tuesday.

In addition to traditional Urdu poetry, Dr. Amin also worked to promote ‘haiku’, a Japanese genre of poetry which is completed in three lines only. He triggered a movement to introduce haiku in Pakistani Urdu poetry by arranging haiku ‘Mushaira’ ceremonies and also translated Japanese poets’ poems in Urdu.

The Pakistani poet and intellectual also compiled a Japanese-Urdu dictionary that helped students learn this language.
