RAWALPINDI: Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Rawalpindi Secretary Khalid Yameen Satti has directed officials to take action against transporters found involved in overcharging passengers travelling on various routes in Rawalpindi.
Talking to reporter he said, no one would be allowed to fleece commuters adding that the vehicles of those indulging in overcharging would be impounded.
He said a number of complaints have been lodged by the residents with the RTA regarding overcharging on various routes and warned the transporters not to violate the rules else strict action in accordance with the law would be taken against them.
The RTA secretary also directed transporters to display the fare lists for every destination at their respective terminals and in the vehicles at prominent places.
To a question about fare increase by the transporters after revised fuel prices he said, there was no revision in the fares of public transport and strict action would be taken against those fleecing the passengers. The transporters could not increase fares on their own, he added.
It is pertinent to mention here that the transporters have increased fares at different routes after the announcement of increase in POL prices and warned of stopping their vehicles if Punjab Transport Authority not increased stop-to-stop fares by Rs14 against Rs10.
Taxi and rickshaws have also increased their fares by 10 to 15 per cent after the fresh increase in POL prices. Without any notification, goods transporters have increased fares by 10 per cent and long route transporters increased Rs20 per ticket after hike in POL prices. Khalid Yameen Satti said that local transport bodies have submitted their demands to increase fares according to fresh increase in POL prices, which have been sent to the PTA for further action. Muttahida Transport Welfare Association (MTWA), General Secretary, Ghulam Mustafa and Rawalpindi/Islamabad Suzuki Union Association, Chairman, Raja Riaz have demanded the government to revise the fares of public transport and adjust in accordance with the increase of POL prices.
