PESHAWAR:The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar, the Ministry of SAFRON and UNHCR RAHA (Refugee-Affected and Hosting Areas) Programme will work jointly for the development and capacity building of Afghan refugees students enrolled at UET Peshawar.
In a high-level meeting held here Tuesday, the discussion was also held on matters of mutual interest including the PC-1 submitted in the context of a MoU signed earlier between UET Peshawar and UNHCR to renovate and rehabilitate the infrastructure of major engineering departments and laboratories to increase access for the Afghan refugees to UET’s academic programs and design vocational training courses for enrolled Afghan refugees, said a press release.
Shaferaw, Program Officer UNHCR said UET Peshawar as a public sector university has enrolled a significant number of Afghan refugee students at its Undergraduate engineering programs that will help them get quality education as well as develop their skills.
As part of MoU, he said, UNHCR will soon conduct the technical review of PC-1 and visit the buildings that are to be renovated while UET Peshawar will also engage the Afghan students for short technical courses, identify the scholarships and increase the seats for Afghan refugees in future.
Prof. Dr. Iftikhar Hussain, Vice Chancellor UET Peshawar appreciated the UNHCR team for joint collaboration and agreed to look into the possibilities for outreach programs and considering the request for a discount in tuition fees for Afghan refugees under its self-finance programs.
Laila Mukaram, Program Associate, UNCHR, Fakhr-e-Alam, Chief Coordinator RAHA, CAR, Tahir Khan, Coordinator, RAHA CAR, Prof. Dr. Rawid Khan, Director Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Dr. Misbah Ullah, Treasure and Prof. Dr. Tahir Khan, Chairman Department of Mechatronics Engineering UET Peshawar were also present on the occasion.
