ISLAMABAD: Around 15,025.44 acres area of Pakistan Railways has been licensed or leased out during the past ten years, official sources said on Sunday.
They said that this area has been leased out for different purposes including premium shops, stacking, agriculture, parking stands and petrol pumps.
The sources said that efforts were being made to upgrade the railway facilities with an aim to provide affordable fast journey to passengers.
“The speed of passenger trains will be raised from 65-110 kilometer per hour to 160 kilometer per hour. This will significantly decrease the timing of journey,” they said.
Similarly, the speed of freight would also be enhanced and they would start operating at 120 kilometer per hour. “Computer based signaling and control system as well as grade separation to ensure safety of train operations is being introduced,” they said.
They said that the doubling of Railways track from Lahore to Peshawar via Rawalpindi would be completed in next five years.
Sharing further details the sources said that 730-kilometer track had been partially rehabilitated through Complete Track Renewal, Sleeper Renewal and Rail Renewal under different PSDP Projects.
They said that PC-I for rehabilitation of Track and Bridges in Sukkur Division was in process. About 86 per cent of Railways bridges are over 100-year-old but all they were safe for train operations due to effective maintenance, rehabilitation and strengthening. The bridges are inspected on yearly basis and their minor repairing is carried out departmentally in routine to ensure safety. Recently 230 bridges have been rehabilitated under various development projects, the sources added.
