Capacity building crucial for effective disaster management: NDMA

ISLAMABAD:National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Member Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Idris Mehsud has said that capacity building of disaster management authorities and organizations is crucial and it is the only solution for effective handling of natural calamities across the country.

He said this while exchanging his views at Monitoring and Evaluation Workshop on Evaluation of Program Activities conducted in 2018, organized by National Humanitarian Network (NHN) on the other day.

The workshop held various technical deliberations and group discussions to mull over strategies, concepts and future course of action to deal with any disaster and emergent situation.

Idris Mehsud said all institutions working in the field of disaster management should liaison with each other in order to share their experience so that everyone can play its effective role in coping any untoward situation.

Timely response and recovery are most essential part of disaster management and in this regard, amicable measures should be taken to remove all impediments on the way of disaster management organizations, he added.

The speakers at the workshop also emphasized on strong communication and cooperation linkages among disaster management authorities as it would give a positive impact to handle natural and manmade disasters along any emergency situation.

There should a common platform for all disaster management organizations working at union council level for creating awareness at the grass roots level as awareness is the key component of disaster management endeavours, they said.

The representatives from NDMA, Rescue 1122, Provincial Disaster Management Authorities, Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre, erstwhile Federally Administrated Tribal Areas Disaster Management Authority, journalists and faculty members of various universities participated in the workshop.
