ISLAMABAD:White Cane Safety Day has been celebrated across the world to highlight blind and visually impaired people’s achievements on October 15 every year. It also reminds people about the how the white cane is an important tool in helping the blind and the visually impaired live with greater independence.
The mission of White Cane Day is to educate the world about blindness and how the blind and visually impaired can live and work independently while giving back to their communities, to celebrate the abilities and successes achieved by blind people in a sighted world and to honor the many contributions being made by the blind and visually impaired.
Different organizations organize promotional activities involving public as part of a goal to help to increase awareness of the use of white cane and the laws that govern its use.
Activities such as visual displays, walks, meetings, public service announcements, and the distribution of t-shirts reminding people about the day are all part of the day’s activities. The Directorate General of Special Education would observe international white cane safety day on October 17.
