IWMB current staff patrols only 40 percent of MHNP area

ISLAMABAD:Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) staff comprising of 26 members managed to patrolonly in 40 percent of the total area of the Margalla Hills National Park (MHNP).Talking to , an IWMB official here on Wednesday said the board had written forsanctioning 37 new posts to the ministry of climate change.He said as per the procedure final approval would be given by the Finance Division which hadmade certain queries on the proposal which would be addressed to attain the authorization of posts.Margalla Hills National Park (MHNP) was sprawling over 173.86 Kilometers and facingproblems of illegal hunting and catching (poaching) of rare wildlife species due to lack of propergears, and resources by the authorities concerned, he added.He said spatial monitoring and reporting tool (SMART) was being implemented with the technical assistance of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) which was helpful.There were still certain technological errors hampering effective patrolling and monitoringin the national park, he added.The IWMB official maintained that with the inclusion of new posts, there would be visible improvement in the patrolling of the staff. The area wise monitoring would get better withmore staff and appropriate deployment, he added.
