ISLAMABAD: A new polio case was reported from Lakki Marwat, a district of Khyber Pakthunkhwa, health official confirmed on Thursday.
He said that victim of this crippling disease, two year child Zunaira daughter of Faridullah was a residence of union council Tajazai of District Lakki Marwat.
This was the fifth case reported in the country while first case from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in year 2017.
He said that the child was vaccinated against the polio due to which she was not suffering from any residual weakness and can walk like a normal child.
The official said that the case was detected due to strong surveillance system that has been put in place by the government.
He said that the linkages of the virus was being traced and will be shared as it is investigated.
He said that the current polio epidemiology in the country was best ever observed. Cases have declined from 306 in 2014 to 54 in 2015 and only 20 in 2016.
He said that momentum was maintained in 2017 where the current case count of four compares besides this new to 16 same point in time during 2016.
He said that all vaccinations teams have been asked to strive hard for best ever on-going nationwide campaign setting the foundation of wiping out the virus from the last remaining areas.
He said that the national and provincial political and religious leadership have also requested all sectors especially the parents to fully facilitate frontline workers in this noble cause.
