Show cause issued to Geo News for airing abusive words

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) had issued a show cause notice to M/s Independent Media Corporation (Geo News) for airing abusive words in its programme.

The abusive words were used in a programme ‘Aj Shahzaib Khanzada kay Sath’ dated September 26, 2017, said a press release.

It came to the notice of the Monitoring Wing of the Authority that in the said programme, Minister of State for Interior Affairs Mohammad Talal Chaudhary, uttered such words as could be called indecent and against the commonly accepted norms of society.

The remarks were aired live in the said programme. Airing of such content was in violation of several clauses of PEMRA (Amendment) Act 2007 as well as Electronic Media Code of Conduct 2015.

In the show cause issued to the TV channel, the Authority had directed the management of the TV channel to furnish reply on the said violation within a period of seven (7) days i.e. on or before October 4, 2017.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the TV channel was also called upon to appear before PEMRA hearing committee for personal hearing on the said date within the stipulated time. In case of failure to reply or non-appearance for personal hearing the Authority shall have the right to initiate ex-parte proceedings.
