KIEV, Sep 11 (XINHUA/APP):Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada, or parliament, has passed a bill on the presidential impeachment procedure supported by the majority of the lawmakers, according to a statement on Tuesday.
The explanatory note to the bill says that it creates opportunities for the practical implementation of impeachment by eliminating a number of shortcomings and gaps in the current legislation governing this procedure.
According to the bill, the parliament can remove the president of Ukraine from office by impeachment only in the event of treason or other crimes.
The adoption of the presidential impeachment law was one of the election promises of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who took office on May 20. He introduced the bill to the Verkhovna Rada last month.
