KARACHI: Alarming increase has been registered in the number of Chikungunya cases in Karachi during first nine months of the current year.
The self limiting ailment is largely attributed as the disease of poverty with people representing low socio-economic section cited as its commonest victim, often exposed due to poor hygiene and sanitary conditions.
Concerned officials sharing details of the cases said 4343 chikungunya patients were registered with the ailment till September
this year as against 405 in 2016.
Six new cases of the mosquito borne disease were mentioned to be recorded during first 10 days of the current month.
People pertaining to productive age group, often earning members of the affected household are reported to be worst hit thus also casting a negative impact on the economic well being of the concerned communities.
