KARACHI: Chemicals used for cosmetic goods, stored at a godown in Nursery, a commercial area off Pakistan Employees Cooperative Housing Society (PECHS), block 6, caught fire Wednesday, killing one Salman Sarwar and causing injuries to a few others.
According to area police, the deceased was employed at the
godown as a guard whereas injured included his colleagues working in different capacities at the site.
Nature of injuries of these workers were said to be not very serious and provided with needed first aid at Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre.
Short circuit was initially identified as the cause of blaze that assumed intensity as workers were reportedly engaged in mixing the chemicals at the time of incident.
The occurrence is also reported to had caused blast coupled with a bang shattering the surrounding buildings, however, according to police officials the blast did not take place within the affected building but outside.
Bomb disposal squad and Counter Terrorism Department are presently investigating the exact cause of the blast and subsequent fire.
According to Chief Fire Officer, Tehseen Siddiqui the godown located in the basement of a multi-storeyed building, also affected other floors and could be doused through hectic efforts.
Twelve fire tenders and three water bowsers were engaged, he said mentioning that fire fighters belonging to KMC, despite their severe limitations in terms of material managed to control the fire.
Representatives of the city administration also reached the site and supervised the rescue work.
