Smoking prohibited in KMC’s parks, hospitals

KARACHI:Metropolitan Commissioner (MC) Dr. Syed Saif-ur-Rehman said that a ban has been imposed on smoking in Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC’) parks, departments and hospitals.

He said this in a meeting with a delegation of the Society for Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC) at his office here, said a statement on Wednesday.

Dr. Saif said that a campaign should be launched for awareness about use of tobacco and the KMC will cooperate with all organisations in this regard.

The delegation said that the SPARC was made in 1992 in Islamabad and is working in different cities.

The Metropolitan Commissioner appreciated SPARC’s efforts and said that the KMC will also work to stop the children from use of tobacco and smoking.

He said that media’s role is also important to save the children from smoking, especially at open places and roundabouts and important locations.

The delegation informed that global youth tobacco survey has revealed that 13.3 percent boys and 6.6 percent girls of 13 to 15 years of age use tobacco.

They said that sale of all tobacco to the people less than 18-year age is banned.

The delegation was comprised Incharge Project SPRAC Sadia Shakil and Media Officer Kashif Mirza while Chairperson medical and health committee Naheed Fatima, Senior Director medical and health services Dr Beerbal genani and other officers were also present.
