LAHORE:Tunnel Farming can increase production of out of season vegetables 8 to 10 times.
The Punjab government is providing financial assistance in this regard and the growers should avail the opportunity, a spokesman of Agriculture department said this here on Monday.
He said that the government has fixed a target of 3,000 acres of land for installation of subsidized tunnels. There is an estimate of Rs 225,000 per acre cost for installations of tunnels and the government will provide 50% subsidy to the farmers selected under the scheme, he added.
“Tomatoes, cucumber, capsicum, bitter gourd and other vegetables can be promoted through the tunnel farming. Vegetables are expensive natural source of essential nutrients and minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates and salts to human health,” he said.
He said that medical researchers and nutritional experts recommend increasing use of vegetables to seek protection from diseases.
He said that Per Capita consumption of vegetables in Pakistan is 51 Kg, while it is 71 Kg in the world.
He said that there is a rapid increase in demand of vegetables in the country but their production has been stagnant, as a result the price is increasing.
The growers have a golden opportunity to use the tunnel farming and earn maximum profit, he added.
