Youm-e-Ashur observed with due solemnity

LAHORE: Youm-e-Ashur, the 10th of Muharram, was observed with due solemnity amid extra-ordinary tight security, here on Sunday.

The central Zuljinnah procession of Ashura, taken out from Nisar Haveli inside Mochi Gate at midnight on Saturday, culminated on Sunday evening at Karbala Gamay Shah.

The procession passed through its traditional route Imambargah Syed Wajid Ali Shah, Lakkar Mandi, Imambargah Mehdi Shah, Mubarik Haveli, Chowk Nawab Sahab, Kucha Qazi Khan, Imambargah Moulvi Feroze

Ali, Mohallah Pir Gilanian, Chohatta Mufti Baqar, Chowk Purani Kotwali, Kashmiri Bazaar, Sunehri Masjid, Dabbi Bazaar, Suha Bazaar, Gumti Bazaar, Said-Mitha Bazaar, Tehsil Bazaar, Bazaar Hakiman, Oonchi Masjid and Bhatti Chowk.

Mourners, while beating their chest and reciting Noha, were accompanying the procession. They also observed flagellation (Matam) with chained-knives at several points on the route.

A sizeable number of sabeels of water, milk and juices were set up mostly by Sunnis along the route to facilitate the mourners.

The Health department also set up medical camps for providing first aid to the mourners injured during flagellation.

The district administration had made foolproof security arrangements to keep law and order situation under control.

Thousands of law enforcers guarded the main procession till its conclusion at Karbala Gamay Shah.

Hundreds of CCTV cameras installed first time in the city under Safe City Project closely monitored the Zuljinnah procession to avoid any untoward incident.

Later, after culmination of the main Zuljinnah procession, a Majlis-e-Sham-e-Ghariban was held inside Karbala Gamay Shah where noted Zakireen highlighted the importance of the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions.
