Unbeaten Laiba Ijaz wins Girls Junior Squash League title

PESHAWAR: Promising and unbeaten Laiba Ijaz clinched the trophy of the Girls Junior Age Group Under-15 Squash League-2016 played under the aegis of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Squash Association here PAF Hashim Khan Squash Complex on Friday.

Former World Champion Qamar Zaman was the chief guest on this occasion. A total of 21 female players took part in the week long League organized by KP Squash Association to provide much needed competitive boost to the girls players associated with the game.

Laiba Ijaz secured victories in all matches of the League she played. In the last two matches of the final day proceedings, Laiba defeated Naeema Khalid in a marathon four sets. Both Naeema Khalid and Laiba exhibited good squash with some good nicks and drops were also witnessed.

Laiba has full command over her length shorts, putting Naeema Khalid in the back of the court all the time. Laiba who also got a face injury in the match against Hira Aqeel, lost the first set by 9-11 but she bounced back and secured victories in all three consecutive sets, the score was 11-6, 11-5 and 11-9.

After securing victory against Naeema Khalid, Laiba played her last League match against Manahil. Laiba took no time in beating Manahil in straight sets, the score was 11-6, 11-5 and 11-5.

In the other matches of the League Nimra Khalid, who got second position, defeated Eman Khan in straight sets, the score was 11-8, 11-5 and 11-9. Hira Aqeel, younger sister of Nimra Aqeel, got third position in the League as she defeated Naeema Khalid by 3-2 in a thrilling five sets match.

Hira Aqeel played well and despite conceding the first to sets to Naeema Khalid at 6-11 and 8-11, she staged a strong comeback and won three consecutive sets by 12-10, 11-9 and 11-7. Naeema Khalid got fourth position in the League as she beat Sana in her last League match in straight sets, 3-0, the score was 11-6, 11-5 and 11-4.

In the other matches Maira beat Sana by 3-0, the score was 11-5, 11-9 and 11-6 while Manahil beat Maira by 3-2 in another thrilling match lasted for 38 minutes. Both Manahil and Maira gave each other a tough fight.

The first set was won by Manahil at 11-8, but she lost to Maira in the second set at 4-11. Maira also got the third set by 7-11 but Manahil after conceding a set, managed her position and secured victories in fourth and fifth sets at 11-4 and 11-7.

At the end, the chief guest former World Champion Qamar Zaman gave away trophies, certificates and cash prizes to the position holders of the League. He also promised that more and more tournaments would be organized so that like boys, ample opportunities would be given to girls to come up and show their hidden talent.

Legendary Qamar Zaman said that Pakistan Squash Federation President is also giving due importance to female squash and that is why as he desired the association organized two tournaments including a league for the female players. He said from October 6 another female squash event would be organized in Peshawar while in the same month National Women Squash Championship will be organized at Jansher Khan Squash Complex Abbottabad.
