Sindh Govt to assume management of Green Line, Orange Line bus services in Feb: Sharjeel Memon

Karachi:The Sindh government has finalized preparations to assume management of the Green Line and Orange Line bus services in February 2025.

A high-level meeting, chaired by Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon, was held in Karachi to review the formalities for transferring the management of the Green Line bus service from the federal government to the Sindh government. The meeting also deliberated on transferring the operations of the Orange Line bus service to the Sindh government.

The meeting was attended by Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, MD Sindh Mass Transit Authority Kamal Dayo, CEO Trans Karachi Tariq Manzoor Chandio, as well as consultants for the Green Line bus service and operators of the Orange Line bus service.

Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stressed the importance of ensuring a smooth transfer of operations and instructed the consultants to expedite the required actions. He also directed Secretary Transport Asad Zamin to review the legal aspects for introducing reforms in the project agreement.

Senior Minister stated that the Green Line project was initially scheduled to be handed over to the Sindh government by the federal government in January. He added that the Sindh government is fully prepared to assume operations of the Green Line bus service in February 2025.

He mentioned that there had been complaints about the federal government entering into costly contracts for the Green Line. Following the handover, the Sindh government will review these contracts. He emphasized that the Green Line project is a vital service for the passengers of Karachi, and the Sindh government is committed to enhancing its performance and quality.

Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that their priority was to provide the public with a reliable and comfortable public transport system. He added that the Sindh government aims to modernize and expand public transport projects to cater to the growing needs of urban centers.

He stated that after the transfer, the Sindh government will introduce operational improvements and upgrades to ensure that the Green Line bus service remains a model of sustainable urban transit.

Oath taking ceremony of SHC Additional Judges on Jan 29

Karachi:The Oath taking ceremony of newly appointed Additional Judges of High Court of Sindh will be held on January 29, at 10:30 a.m. in front of Committee Room of SHC in High Court Building.

Chief Justice, High Court of Sindh Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui will administer the oath to the newly appointed additional judges.

Miran Muhammad Shah, Ms. Tasneem Sultana, Riazat Ali Sahar, Muhammad Hasan Akber, Khalid Hussain Shahani, Abdul Hamid Bhurgari, Syed Fiaz ul Hassan Shah, Jan Ali Junejo, Nisar Ahmed Bhanbhro, Ali Haider 'Ada', Muhammad Osman Ali Hadi and Muhammad Jaffer Raza are among the newly appointed additional judges of the SHC.

KWSC restores water supply from Hub station after maintenance closure

Karachi:Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation restored supply of water to West and Keamari districts of the metropolis on Tuesday evening after completion of annual electric maintenance work at Hub Pumping station.

During annual maintenance work for 2024-25 at Hub Pumping Station, K-Electric suspended power supply resulting into shut down of water supply to District West and Keamari, the KWSC spokesperson informed adding, however Dhabeji Pumping Station continued supplying water to the city as usual.

Population in the District West and Keamari were estimated to face a total water shortage of 37 MGD due to maintenance closure. A total of 650 MGD of water is supplied to the city and 613 MGD of water supply to the city continued as usual from Dhabeji.

It took over 6 hours to complete the work and power was restored at Hub Pumping Station, the spokesperson said adding that on restoration of the power the pumping station started supplying water to the western and south western parts of the city.

Karachi police arrested 688 accused in last week

Karachi: Karachi Police in its drive against criminals arrested more than 688 alleged accused during last week from different parts of the megalopolis.

According to spokesman for Karachi Police on Monday, about 19 injured accused including 35 were arrested in 21 encounters while five accused were killed.

Police recovered 28 different types of illegal arms and ammunition including 2 mini Kalashnikov, 14 motorcycles and an auto-rickshaw from the accused after encounters.

In its drive against drug peddling in the city, the police seized 34.202 kg hashish heroin and ice methamphetamine.

About 100 illegal arms and ammunition used in looting citizens were recovered from street criminals.

As many as 41 snatched or stolen motorcycles and three vehicles were taken into custody from different areas.

KU’s Professor Dr Abdul Waheed launches second edition of Quantitative Research Methods


Karachi: Professor Dr Abdul Waheed of the Department of Economics of the University of Karachi launched the second edition of ‘Quantitative Research Methods’ at the KU’s Applied Economics Research Centre’s Auditorium on Monday.



During the launching ceremony, renowned economist Dr Kaiser Bengali, former vice chancellor of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University Shaheed Benzairabad Professor Dr Amanat Ali Jalbani, and others shared that the book provides a practical approach, introduced the real application of different research tools, and met the demands of teachers and students.



They added that this book is a gift for young scholars, researchers and students of MPhil and PhD programs could benefit greatly from it.



They observed that the book ‘Quantitative Research Methods’ focuses on presenting primary tools of analysis with real examples and references to these in different research papers published in journals of international repute.



They mentioned that the book’s topics cover the major part of the syllabus of the research methodology course of master’s in economics, finance, business administration, and public administration and commerce.



This book would benefit students who are writing their master’s, MPhil, or PhD theses and those who want to write research articles for academic and professional journals.



Professor Dr Abdul Waheed the author of Quantitative Research Methods is also the registrar of the University of Karachi and an economist with expertise in quantitative development analyses and specializes in international trade and finance issues.



He informed the audience that the book has eight chapters and could be used as a reference book for statistics and economics courses.



Dr Waheed has 45 scholarly contributions in peer-reviewed academic journals, three books, and a monograph, and also served governmental departments and leading banks and corporate organizations.



Professor Dr Abdul Waheed has achieved a PhD degree from the Graduate School of International Development, Nagoya University, Japan in 2005 and also completed his post-doctorate research under the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.



During his PhD research, he constructed a financial macroeconomic model and designed an external debt reduction strategy for Pakistan.



As many as five students have completed their PhD and eleven students have completed MPhil under the supervision of Professor Dr Abdul Waheed while he has also taught different courses at the graduate and post-graduate levels in Japan,Turkey, UAE, Bahrain as well as in the various higher educational institutes of Pakistan.



He also contributed to reputed economists’ journals and magazines as well as in newspapers as the subject specialized.
