Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah is set to inaugurate the first segment of the highly anticipated Malir Expressway, a state-of-the-art, high-speed corridor on January 11.

The initial 9.1 km stretch, which runs from Korangi Causeway to Shah Faisal, represents a significant milestone in Karachi's infrastructure development, promising improved connectivity and reduced traffic congestion.

This decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah at the New Secretariat, where the project's final progress was reviewed.

Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, Mayor of Karachi Murtaza Wahab, PSCM Agha Wasif, Commissioner of Karachi Hassan Naqvi, Adl IG Karachi Javed Odho, Secretary Local Government Khalid Hyder Shah, Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, and PD Malir Expressway Niaz Soomro attended the meeting.

The Malir Expressway (MEW) is the largest Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project in Sindh. It features a three-lane dual-carriageway with modern, access-controlled infrastructure. Spanning approximately 40 km, the expressway connects Korangi Creek Avenue (DHA) to the M-9 Motorway (Superhighway) near Kathore, offering a critical link for commuters and significantly reducing travel time.

The expressway will include dedicated interchanges, providing seamless access to key residential and commercial areas along the route. The first segment will feature a ramp to facilitate immediate traffic flow and will be complemented by a connecting flyover from Korangi, which is expected to be completed within two months.

The construction of the Jam Sadiq Interchange and road rehabilitation projects at the EBM and Shah Faisal Interchanges are progressing steadily. Encroachments at the Quaidabad Interchange have been cleared, and construction is ongoing to enhance connectivity.

A Toll Plaza will manage traffic flow, charging Rs100 for cars and jeeps, and Rs200 for heavy vehicles. Security measures will include patrols by traffic police, fire brigades, and Rescue 1122 ambulances.

The CM directed law enforcement agencies to deploy district and traffic police at key entry and exit points, including the Jam Sadiq, EBM, and Shah Faisal Interchanges.

The traffic police will patrol both sides of the expressway continuously in vehicles. Dedicated traffic police will be present on the expressway to ensure proper traffic flow.

To ensure smooth operations, the CM has declared the stretch from the Shah Faisal Interchange to the Shah Faisal Colony Bridge as a no-parking zone. Only commercial vehicles, cars, jeeps, and buses will be permitted on the expressway, while motorcycles and rickshaws are prohibited.

The Malir Expressway is poised to transform Karachi's transportation landscape, providing swift access to residential developments and commercial hubs. Once fully operational, it is expected to alleviate congestion and boost economic activity throughout the city.

The CM emphasized the importance of efficient traffic management and directed officials to promptly address any operational challenges to ensure the timely completion of ongoing works.

Karachi: The Students' Guidance, Counseling and Placement Bureau of the University of Karachi and FES Higher Education Consultants signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Tuesday to establish an understanding of a working relationship for career counseling, maximizing academic and professional opportunities for the students of the University of Karachi, and enhancing their learning and entrepreneurial experiences.

As per the MoU, both parties committed to empower students in their pursuit of academic and professional goals by offering educational guidance, raising awareness, sharing essential knowledge and skills.

The collaboration aims to strengthen career counseling frameworks and development systems, enhancing the employability and job readiness of students.

According to the MoU, the FES Consultants will support initiatives aimed at enhancing the professional development of faculty and the skills of students. The objective is to improve the quality of learning outcomes and the overall educational experience.

The MoU seeks to establish and foster collaborations with foreign universities, enabling joint efforts in teaching, learning, and research.

The parties will actively explore opportunities to launch joint projects, events, and initiatives of mutual interest, benefiting both institutions and promoting academic and research innovation.

The KU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Professor Khalid Mahmood Iraqi and the FES Consultants Director Dr Syed Touqeer Shah inked the MoU documents at the VC Secretariat.

Karachi: Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services Regulation and Coordination held a meeting with an executive delegation of College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) on Tuesday.

The committee was represented by Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti, Senator Ahmed Khan, Senator Anusha Rahman, Senator Fawzia Arshad, Senator Ifran ul Haq Siddiqui, Senator Liaquat Khan Tarkai, Senator Humayun Mohmand and Senator Masroor Ahsan.

The committee praised CPSP's progress and achievements and highlighted grey areas such as ethics of medical professionals, quantity and quality of research being done in medical field and lack of proper check on private medical colleges.

Chairman of the committee Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti praised CPSP's progress and said that the committee was ready to facilitate the college to unlock more potential and gain improvement in grey areas.

Senator Irfan Siddiqui while praising the college of being few public institutions who are working exceptionally good, highlighted that apart from focusing on Post Graduate quality, the college should explore ways to improve the under graduate education as well and in this regard the senator extended the committee's platform for doing so.

Speaking about the ethics of the medical professionals, Senator Anusha Rahman highlighted that every Doctor except few are opting C-section operations which is not only unethical but inhumane as well. She urged the college to work more in the medical ethics of the Doctors.

Similarly Senator Dr. Humayun Mohmand raised the issue of lack of research orientation in medical professionals.

He urged the college management to do more to introduce the research trend in medical professionals.

The delegation of CPSP, represented by Professor Khalid Masood Gondal, Prof. M. Amir Khan, Prof. Khalid Ahmed Ashrafi, Prof. Abdullah Muttaqi, Prof. Irshad Waheed and others, assured the committee of strong mechanism on ethics education.

The delegation also requested the committee for their facilitation to get access in medical institutions of Gulf countries, which was assured by the committee.
