ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Wednesday decided to start the regular hearing of the case pertaining to the holding of Sindh local government (LG) elections in the province.
The first hearing of the case would be conducted on September 7, in the ECP aiming to ensure the holding of LG elections in the province.
The notices have been issued to Sindh chief secretary, local government secretary and advocate general. The assistance of attorney general for Pakistan has also been sought in this regard.
This was decided in a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.
The forum reiterated that the holding of LG elections in Sindh was legal and constitutional obligation of the Commission and provincial government was bound to assist the ECP in this regard.
The meeting reviewed Sindh government’s stance wherein the Sindh representative told the ECP that the province could not hold local government elections due to a pending case in the court on the 2017 census results.
The Sindh government representative told the ECP in August 23 meeting that the province could not hold local government elections as it had reservations over the 2017 census results and it wanted to make changes in Sindh Local Government Act. It could take around six months.
