LG elections to be announced soon: Mehmood

RAWALPINDI: Provincial Minister for Local Government(LG) and Community development Mian Mehmood-ur-Rasheed on Monday said the schedule of local bodies elections in the province would be announced soon.

Talking to the media outside the Commissioner office, he said legislation about the local body system would be concluded in the next Punjab Assembly session.

“After completing the process of legislation, the date of conducting the local bodies election would be announced”, he said.

The Minister said that the PTI government to introduce, empowered local government system in the history of Punjab, adding in the previous system, the Chairman had no power.

Mehmood informed that 30 per cent development budget would be provided to the village council in the proposed LB system while Mayor and Nazim would be elected directly.

He said that the people of the country rejected the narrative of PML-N in the election of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and bye-election in Sialkot.

The Minister said that efforts are underway to bring legal changes in the NAB and FIA prosecution.

He said that there was no political victimization in the country as the government believes in indiscriminate and across the board accountability, adding the parliamentarians were appearing before the Court of law and no one was above the law.

Mehmood said, the consultancy work is in progress about the Ring road project which would be completed soon.

He said that the Punjab government had allocated a huge amount of Rs 560 billion for development work in the province while work on around 4000 schemes was under tender process which would be started soon.
