MULTAN: Eye sight of three blind persons restored following successful cornea surgeries at Nishtar hospital.
According to official sources, Punjab government issued approval for transplantation of eye-cornea at Nishtar Hospital.
Three blind persons including Aleem (27), Saleem Akhtar (32) and Mehreen (10) underwent eye surgeries and got vision. It is a landmark success in Health Department of South Punjab, said Commissioner Multan Javed Akhtar Mahmood, during his meeting with the patients. He congratulated them for availing matchless facility of eye-sight (vision). Now, the fortunate patients could see everything in the world.
Cornea transplantation will add charm to the lives of thousands of blind persons by restoring their vision, said Commissioner.
Javed Akhtar recalled that Abdul Sattar Edhi had also donated eyes for blind person. He informed that the Health Department had sought permission from Punjab Human Organ Transplantation Authority for cornea transplantation in Nishtar hospital.
Vice Chancellor Nishtar Medical University Dr Rana Altaf also spoke and stated that three surgeries were conducted in Nishtar and all remained successful. Professor Dr Rashid Qamar Rao conducted successful surgeries, he hinted.
Eye surgeon Professor Dr Rashid Qamar Rao stated that eye donations could help offer vision to blind persons. He, however, added that the country lacked trend of donation of eyes.
In order to address shortage of cornea, he suggested the need to set up Eye Bank. Following death, the eyes have life for 12 to 24 hours. Dr Rashid stated. He added that another 130 blind persons had contacted the hospital administration for corneal graft. Pakistan Tehreek Insaf MNA Ahmed Hassan Dehr hailed milestone achievement of Nishtar hospital. He also announced to donate eyes, said official sources.
