Peshawar: The district administration on Wednesday warned shopkeepers that selling cigarettes and other tobacco products to underage individuals is a punishable offence under the Tobacco Control Act, 2011, and urged strict compliance with the law.

Presiding over a meeting on tobacco control, Assistant Commissioner Peshawar Saddar Hasina Khan said the district administration would intensify enforcement to prevent the sale of tobacco products to minors and protect young people from the harmful effects of smoking.

She said smoking is prohibited at educational institutions, healthcare facilities, public transport and other public places under the law, adding that violators would face legal action.

The meeting was informed that the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products within a 20-metre radius of educational institutions and health centres is also prohibited under the Tobacco Control Act.

Hasina Khan directed the relevant departments to ensure effective implementation of tobacco control regulations through regular inspections and awareness campaigns.

She said retailers must comply with legal requirements regarding the sale of tobacco products and cooperate with the authorities.

Expressing concern over the growing trend of smoking among youth, she said the government is committed to discouraging tobacco consumption and safeguarding public health through strict enforcement of existing laws.

Chiniot: Police Khidmat Markaz Chiniot is providing services to citizens with modern facilities, in line with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for better public service delivery.

The performance report of the Markaz for the month of June has been released. More than 9,000 citizens benefited from various police services at the Police Khidmat Markaz Chiniot last month.

During June, 2,238 learner permits, 947 learner permit renewals, 2,764 new regular licenses, and 14 new international driving licenses were issued through the center.

The police also registered 1,731 police verifications, 453 character certificates, 141 tenancy registrations, and 72 missing persons reports last month.

In addition, vehicle and mobile verification, employee verification, and other police services were provided. Speaking in this regard, District Police Officer Dr. Naveed Atif said all possible steps are being taken to improve public service delivery and promote public-friendly policing.

He added that 15 different facilities are being provided to citizens under one roof at the Police Service Centers, with timely guidance and facilities offered as per modern requirements.

Peshawar: A brother and his married sister were shot dead over a domestic dispute in the district of Bannu, police said on Wednesday.

According to police, the shooting occurred in Shabati Kallay near Torkki Kaki. The victims, identified as 26-year-old Zaheer, son of Yousaf Jan, resident of Mirabad Kaki, and his married sister Yasmeen Bibi, sustained critical injuries in the attack.

A Rescue 1122 medical team rushed to the scene and shifted the injured to the District Headquarters Hospital in Bannu, where doctors pronounced both dead.

Police reached the site, collected evidence, and launched an investigation. Preliminary inquiries suggest that a domestic dispute led to the killings, although investigators are examining all possible angles to determine the exact motive.

Police said efforts are underway to arrest those involved as the investigation progresses.
