Karachi: Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi organized a musical event to paid tribute to the renowned guitarist Afaq Adnan on his first death anniversary.

The event took place at Jaun Elia Lawn, where a large number of Adnan's students, colleagues, and admirers gathered to honor his memory.

The event featured outstanding performances by various artists, including ACMA The Band, Sounds of Kolachi, Arman Rahim, Ahsan Bari, Faraz Anwar, Shams-ul-Arifeen, Shahid Rahman, Imad-ur-Rehman, Zaib, Russell D'Souza, Jambroz, Mustafa Baloch, Ahmer Mustafa, Muhammad Zubair, Muneeb Khan, Muzammil, and Mohsin Ali.

Renowned singer Arman Rahim expressed his sentiments, stating that Afaq Adnan may no longer be among us, but he will always live in our hearts.

He further praised Adnan as not just a great friend but also an exceptional mentor, describing him as a university of music in himself.

The event became even more mesmerizing as musicians performed some of Afaq Adnan's most famous compositions, leaving the audience enthralled.

The audience deeply appreciated the performances and celebrated the late guitarist's contributions to the music industry.

Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Thursday said that the work is in progress to bring additional water to Karachi through a new canal from the Hub Dam, and by August, an additional 40 million gallons per day (MGD) of water will be available, solving the water scarcity issue in many districts of Karachi, including Lyari.

He said this at the inauguration of the renovation and upgradation of the Bakra Piri Pumping Station in the Singo Lane area of Lyari here.

Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad, Parliamentary Leader of the City Council Karamullah Waqasi, Deputy Parliamentary Leader Dil Muhammad, local leadership of PPP, and members of the City Council were also present on this occasion.

The Mayor Karachi said that the inauguration of development works in Keamari was done yesterday, and today it is being done in Lyari.

The long-standing sewage problem of Lyari was solved by PPP. New machinery has been brought to the Bakra Piri pumping station, he said and added "The PPP chairman, Bilawal Bhutto, promised to lay the K-3 pipeline in Lyari, and the work on the elevated line infrastructure has started. The promise made by Bilawal Bhutto regarding the K-3 pipeline will be fulfilled soon".

He further stated that in terms of road cutting, around Rs 1.25 billion have come to Lyari Town, and these funds will be used soon for the construction of roads here.

"We will stop the theft of water in Lyari", he clarified.

The Mayor Karachi added that we do not support illegal constructions, and the Sindh Building Control Authority is under the control of the Minister for Local Government. We will raise the issue of illegal constructions in front of the local government minister, he said.

As for the Rs 14 billion payment notice served to Bahria Town by the Water Corporation, he said, the law will take its course. KMC and towns will receive funds from road cutting, and our promise is that we will take whatever steps are necessary for the improvement of Karachi's infrastructure.

The journey of serving Karachi under the leadership of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will continue, he said.

Karachi: The 8th meeting of the Senate of Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) was held on Thursday at the Senate Hall of the university, which was chaired by Vice Chancellor Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai.

The Senate was informed that the budget of SMIU in the financial year 2023-24 was first time surplus in the history of the university.

Giving its details it was said that in year 2023-24, SMIU's budget was 963,315,795 rupees, expenditure was 907,484,864 rupees and 55,831,494 rupees were surplus.

The meeting said the grant received from the Federal and Provincial governments was 498,783,149 rupees, while the SMIU's contribution to the budget was Rs. 464,532,646 rupees.

The Senate was further informed that the SMIU's home contribution remained 50 percent to the total budget, generated from its own resources. Also the pension Fund was increased from 134.809 million rupees in the financial year 2023- 24, while it was 74.115 million rupees in year 2022-23.

Likewise, the budget deficit was gradually reduced in the last four years.

The Senate was informed that in the financial year 2018-19 budget deficit was 70 million rupees, in 2019-20 was 67 million rupees, in 2020-21 was 8 million rupees, in 2021-22 was 7 million rupees, in 2022-23 was 6 million rupees and in 2023-24 the SMIU went 50 percent in surplus.

The Senate was also informed that the Endowment Fund of SMIU was increased to 46 million rupees in 2023-24.

The Senate passed resolution for annual budget estimates for the financial year 2024-25, amounting to Rs. 1453.405 million rupees against the recurring resources of the university.

The Senate also approved minutes of the meetings of the Syndicate and other statutory bodies of the university.

Addressing the Senate Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai said SMIU is the first public sector university in the province which has 50 percent surplus budget. He said such success was achieved by reducing expenditures and generating home resources.

Dr. Sahrai said SMIU's efficiency in financial, academic and administrative matters is a reflection of its successful management and policies.

The members of the Senate appreciated Vice Chancellor of SMIU, its faculty and administrative staff for making the SMIU one of the finically sustainable and quality universities of the country.

The meeting was attended by Senate members including Dr. A.Q. Mughal, Research Professor, Greenwich University (Nominee of HEC Islamabad), Prof. Dr. Tauha Hussain Ali, Vice Chancellor, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Sohail Anwar Baloch, Additional Secretary, Universities and Boards Department, Government of Sindh, Haji Muhammad Hanif Tayyab, Ex-Federal Minister and others.
