Journalist group wins MPC elections with thumping majority

MULTAN:Journalist group triumphed with a thumping majority by securing 13 of 17 seats wherein Shakil Anjum succeeded 10th time in Multan Press Club (MPC) Elections here on Friday.

MPC set a new precedent by arranging live vote counting for the first time to make the process totally transparent and results were announced by the election committee late Thursday night.

Voting began a bit later than 9: 00 a.m. and concluded by 5:15 p.m. with elaborate security arrangements. The journalists kept on pouring in for casting their votes for their favourite candidates the whole day long.

Shakil Anjum of Journalist group was elected president by grabbing 403 votes while his opponent Amjad Bokhari of Pioneer Journalist group clinched 224 votes whereas Khalid Chaudhary got 337 and Nouman Babar 282 votes for vice presidents’ slots.

Nisar Awan won as general secretary by securing 357 while his rival Nasir Zaidi grabbed 272 votes while a young chap Rao Muhammad Asif bagged 358 votes for Joint Secretary votes while his opponent Tariq Ansari clinched 247 votes.

For Secretary Finance, Farhan Malghani secured 399 while his rival Muhammad Imran Khan could get 220 votes.

The 11-member executive body included Mumtaz Khan Niazi (375), Wasim Nasir Bobak (340), Kh M Ashraf Siddiqi (339) Abdur Rauf Maan (337), Ms Humaira Shafiq (332), Abdul Jabbar Mufti (323), Muhammad Sharif Joya (311), Javid Iqbal Amber (298), M.Azm Jahangir (297), Syed Tanvir Gillani (296) and Muhammad Mazhar (295) votes.

It is worth mentioning here that Ms Humaira Shafiq was the only female candidate in MPC election and she secured fifth position in executive body.
