Mobile phone snatching, motorcycle thefts trigger public concern

District

MULTAN:Mobile phone snatching and motorcycle theft continue to rise across various police station jurisdictions in the city, prompting citizens to demand enhanced security and effective preventive measures from law enforcement agencies.

According to a spokesperson, multiple incidents of street crime were registered across the city. In separate incidents, Zahid Yaseen’s phone was stolen within the limits of New Multan Police Station, Farooq’s in the BZ Police Station area, Dilshad’s in Purani Kotwali, Umar Zahid’s in Mumtazabad, and Arshad’s in Qutbpur. Additionally, motorcycle thefts were reported by Zaheeb under the Lohari Gate Police Station jurisdiction and Rizwan within the Cantt Police Station limits.

The increasing high resale value of smartphones-ranging from Rs 30,000 to over Rs 550,000-has made mobile devices a primary target for criminals. Victims expressed grave concern not only over financial losses but also regarding potential misuse of personal data, financial applications, and sensitive media stored on their devices.

In response to the surge in criminal activity, citizens urged the Punjab government and local police to strengthen preventive policing, expand CCTV surveillance, intensify neighborhood patrolling, and crack down on illegal markets dealing in stolen mobile phones.

When contacted, police officials stated that advanced technical tools were actively being utilized to trace stolen devices, noting that numerous mobile phones had been successfully recovered and restored to their rightful owners in recent operations. However, residents emphasized that visible policing and sustained operations remain essential to ensure public safety.
