LAHORE: The Punjab Food Authority has taken stringent measures against those involved in adulteration of sweets and confectioneries. Acting on directives from the DG Food Authority, Asim Javed, food safety teams conducted raids at sweet and confectionery units in Mohlanwal and Gajomata.

During the inspections, the teams uncovered, 210 liters of contaminated and substandard syrup, 50 kilograms of expired dough, over 2 maunds of defective toffees containing harmful chemicals and open colorants.

Two confectionery units were shut down, and substantial fines were imposed. The syrup used in sweets was found to be infested with bees and insects. Additionally, the inspections revealed unsanitary and fungus-ridden freezers and poor hygiene and cleanliness practices within the premises while non-food grade packaging materials was also being used.

PFA DG Asim Javed emphasized that the use of substandard and expired materials in food products can lead to digestive issues and infections. He stressed the need for strict
adherence to food safety laws in the production of popular candies, toffees, and sweets.

The Punjab Food Authority is actively inspecting confectionery manufacturing units across the province. Asim Javed warned that any compromise on the quality of food products entering the market would not be tolerated and affirmed that severe actions will be taken against those producing inferior goods.
