PFA seals food units over hygiene violations

Lahore

Lahore: In a decisive move against health violators, the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) carried out continuous operations at multiple locations in Lahore, including Mori Gate, Kahna, Temple Road, and Bhatta Pura, resulting in the closure of oil units, a popular restaurant, a beef shop, and a dairy unit.

The action, taken under the orders of Director General (DG) Punjab Food Authority Asim Javed, follows repeated violations of food safety regulations and non-compliance with previous directives. Over one maund of meat, open spices, decayed vegetables, and stale food items were confiscated and destroyed during the raids.

The DG said that the dairy unit was sealed after milk samples failed quality tests, and a case was registered against its owner. The restaurant was closed for using substandard oil and maintaining unhygienic arrangements, while the beef shop was found with poor storage, filthy freezers, rusted utensils, and a pest infestation. He added that expired meat and spoiled vegetables were discovered in fungus-infected freezers. Open drains, dirty washing areas, and foul-smelling environments were reported at several locations. Essential records and medical certificates of employees were either missing or incomplete, further prompting legal action.

The DG said that continuous inspections of all food points are underway to curb elements harmful to public health. Food safety teams across Punjab are conducting sustained operations to dismantle adulteration and counterfeiting networks.

Following directives from the Chief Minister of Punjab, strict monitoring is being implemented at all stages of food preparation and delivery.

The DG urged the public to support the Authority in eliminating fraudulent practices and report complaints through the helpline 1223.
