PHA’s decision to introduce ‘Biodiversity Corridors’

Lahore

LAHORE:The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) has decided to establish biodiversity corridors across the province to protect green spaces and restore natural ecosystems, here on Saturday.

In this regard,Director General PHA (DGPHA) has issued necessary instructions to district managing directors to implement the initiative.

According to officials, biodiversity corridors were green belts connecting isolated green spaces at different locations, facilitating the movement of plants, seeds and other natural components from one area to another and promoting vegetation growth and ecological restoration.

Under the initiative, district PHA agencies will plant trees suited to local climatic and soil conditions to ensure sustainable growth.

Officials have been directed to give preference to indigenous tree species, including mulberry, banyan and sheesham, owing to their compatibility with the local environment.

These indigenous trees can thrive with relatively little water and limited maintenance while providing food, shade and natural habitats for birds and other wildlife.

The initiative aims to strengthen ecological connectivity, improve biodiversity and contribute to the restoration and preservation of the province’s natural environment.

The PHA has directed the district bodies to plant trees as well as create public awareness about the effects of climate change and conservation of the natural environment.
