Islamabad:President Asif Ali Zardari has assured the press of his continued support for maintaining the highest standards of journalism and an enabling environment for a free press.
In his message on National Newspapers Readership Day, the president said in today’s changing media environment, newspaper readership was no longer confined to the printed page, as newspapers increasingly reached readers through digital platforms and other forms of online access.
“As we mark National Newspapers Readership Day today, I reaffirm my faith in a free press and its role as the Fourth Estate in protecting citizens’ rights, reminding them of their duties towards the State and society, and holding decision-makers accountable,” he said adding that “While we are witnessing the rapid growth of diverse news media, newspapers continue to hold an important place in shaping public opinion and promoting an informed citizenry”.
The president pointed out that the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, targeted dissemination of fake news and disinformation campaigns were also influencing our social values, cultural outlook and behaviour. In this environment, credible and balanced reporting, supported by responsible editorial oversight, is more important than ever.
He urged the youth of Pakistan to develop the habit of reading newspapers, whether in print or through digital platforms, while also equipping themselves with modern technological skills.
“I respect the impartial and balanced role of newspapers in strengthening our democracy. I also expect editorial boards to continue giving due attention to socio-economic, religious and political issues, as well as foreign policy, in the broader interest of the State and society,” the president added.
He hoped that the All Pakistan Newspaper Society (APNS) and Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) will continue to contribute to informed national discourse and greater public understanding of regional and global developments.
