LAHORE:The Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has issued 11,752 e-challans for overloading-related traffic violations across Punjab this month through its AI-powered surveillance system, aiming to curb dangerous practices and improve road safety.
According to a PSCA spokesperson, Safe City cameras detected 6,204 violations involving passengers travelling beyond the permitted capacity of vehicles, while 5,548 violations involved goods protruding beyond prescribed vehicle limits.
The spokesperson said the authority’s Virtual Traffic Management System, integrated with artificial intelligence-powered cameras, continuously monitored traffic and identified vehicles carrying excess passengers or transporting goods unsafely. Relevant field enforcement teams were alerted to take action against violators.
The spokesperson said the transportation of exposed iron rods, steel bars and other materials extending beyond vehicle boundaries posed serious risks to road users, particularly motorcyclists. Similarly, carrying passengers beyond the permitted capacity of buses could endanger lives and increase the risk of serious accidents.
The PSCA spokesperson said technology-based monitoring was helping authorities detect violations promptly and facilitate enforcement action against those endangering public safety.
The authority reiterated that action against dangerous overloading would continue and urged transport operators and vehicle owners to comply with prescribed passenger limits and safe cargo-loading requirements.
