ISLAMABAD:Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Information for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ikhtiar Wali Khan on Thursday said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) must demonstrate its commitment to the democratic process to move forward with signing the Charter of Democracy.
Speaking to a private television channel, he said the scope of the Charter of Democracy should be broadened to include a wider range of political parties.
Referring to the May 9 and November 26 incidents, he said PTI needed to acknowledge its responsibility for the events and apologize before progress could be made towards a broader democratic agreement.
Responding to a query, he said a Charter of Democracy and a Charter of Economy could both be pursued, adding that the government was willing to cooperate with PTI in areas falling within its administrative domain.
However, he said PTI also needed to review its own conduct, particularly its statements against the establishment and what he described as the promotion of narratives against the state.
Regarding political harmony, Ikhtiar Wali Khan said that PTI had previously been reluctant to engage in talks with the government or other opposition parties. He said PTI was now presenting itself as a supporter of democracy according to its own terms.
