SC adjourns telecom taxation case indefinitely

Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned further hearing of a case concerning taxes imposed on telecommunications services for an indefinite period.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail heard the case, during which an interesting exchange took place between the judge and counsel Uzair Bhandari over the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

During the hearing, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail asked whether a direct appeal should have been filed in the case, observing that the 27th Constitutional Amendment had now been introduced.

In response, Uzair Bhandari told the court that, in protest, he had refrained from reading the 27th Constitutional Amendment for a long time, although he had now gone through some of its contents.

Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail advised him against making such remarks, pointing out that Farooq H. Naek was also present in the courtroom.

Uzair Bhandari responded that Farooq H. Naek had been a member of the committee formed to prepare the constitutional amendment.

The judge then made a light-hearted remark, observing that Farooq H. Naek had one hand in the court and the other in Parliament, with both sides pulling him in their respective directions.

The court subsequently adjourned further proceedings in the case for an indefinite period.
