Karachi: The Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) has successfully achieved another landmark by performing transplantation of two corneas from a deceased donor. The late Sher Ali Taheem, a resident of Karachi, brought a priceless gift of sight to two deserving individuals, converting a moment of grief into one of lasting hope.
According to press release issued by the SIUT here Thursday, Sher Ali a 17-year-old student, was admitted in SIUT following a severe brain hemorrhage. Despite all possible medical efforts, he remained in intensive care for two days before being declared brain dead.
Sher was deeply connected with SIUT. At the young age of eight, he had received a kidney transplant when his mother donated a kidney. Ali’s kidney functioned for almost ten years before rejection after he had recently become dialysis-dependent and was awaiting a second transplant.
In this moment of heartbreaking loss, Sher Ali’s family-already an advocate of organ donation-demonstrated extraordinary courage and compassion by consenting to donate his corneas. The corneal transplants were successfully performed by SIUT team on the January 7th this year restoring hope and vision to two patients a 45-year-old man and a 21 year old student
Prof Adib Rizvi, founding director of SIUT, and the SIUT transplant team paid rich tributes to the family’s exceptional courage and humanity and called upon society at large to come forward and embrace deceased organ donation so that many more lives may be healed, saved and transformed.
