Karachi: Sindh Madressatul Islam University’s newly elected Student Council office bearers’ oath-taking ceremony was held here at the main campus of the University on Thursday.
The Provincial Ombudsman Sindh, Muhammad Sohail Rajput, attended as Chief Guest and, along with the Vice Chancellor of SMIU Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai, administered the oath to the newly elected representatives.
Addressing at the ceremony held at the Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto Auditorium of SMIU, Muhammad Sohail Rajput said that it was always a pleasure for him to visit Sindh Madressatul Islam University and exchange thoughts with young population. Commending the enthusiasm and sense of responsibility of the newly elected SMIU Students’ Council, the Ombudsman congratulated them and appreciated outgoing SMIU Student Council’s contributions towards students’ engagement and activities.
He said that the students couldn’t secure success without dreaming high. The 21st century is evolving very fast, the same momentum and change the youth have to adapt.
Referring the poetry of Allama Muhammad Iqbal and Faiz Ahmed Faiz, he highlighted vision, empathy, communication, and patience as key leadership qualities. He also praised SMIU’s vice chancellor Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai for providing this kind of exposure to the students that connects academic learning with practical exposure.
Vice Chancellor of SMIU Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai expressed gratitude to Rajput for attending the ceremony despite his demanding responsibilities and acknowledged his continued engagement with SMIU, particularly through internship opportunities that provide students with valuable professional exposure. The Vice Chancellor emphasized that universities in developing societies must align their leadership with social, national, and regional realities. He highlighted that a university rests on three core stakeholders-faculty, supporting staff, and students-with students being the most vital.
Sahrai recalled that in the last five years students’ enrollment has grown from 1,800 to over 5,500, attributing this achievement to collective performance, effective governance, and students acting as ambassadors of the institution.
Encouraging holistic development, Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai urged students to strengthen platforms such as Model United Nations and TED-style forums, innovation and design initiatives, and cultural activities.
Wafa Mansoor Buriro, Assistant Professor and patron of the SMIU Literary Society lauded the dedication of SMIU students, particularly praising the Literary Society, while Senior Manager Student Affairs Qurratulain Memon briefed the audience on the transparent electoral process and showcased documentaries highlighting SMIU’s vibrant extracurricular culture.
The Ombudsman Sindh Sohail Rajput along with the Vice Chancellor Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai distributed appreciation certificates among patrons of the students’ societies and office bearers and outstanding members of outgoing council.
