LAHORE:The Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA) on Saturday sought more than Rs.590 million for the installation of modern artificial intelligence (AI)-based traffic signals across the provincial capital to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
According to official sources,TEPA has submitted a formal summary to the Punjab Housing Department for the release of funds to install automated traffic signals equipped with vehicle video detection technology.
The initiative has moved forward following the successful completion of an initial pilot project, under which modern pelican traffic signals have already been activated at Adda Plot and Jati Umra Chowk.
Under the proposed project, major intersections across Lahore will gradually be integrated into the advanced traffic management system to replace conventional traffic control mechanisms.
The AI-based system will use cameras installed at intersections to monitor vehicle movement and assess traffic pressure in real time.
Signal timings will then be adjusted automatically according to traffic volume and flow.
The system will allow longer signal durations on roads experiencing heavier traffic, helping improve vehicle movement and reduce unnecessary delays at busy intersections.
According to sources,TEPA was preparing to introduce technology-based traffic management solutions to address growing traffic congestion and improve the overall efficiency of the city’s road network.
