District

MULTAN:Estimates for the dualisation of Vehari Road from BCG Chowk to Double Phatak have been prepared and forwarded to the competent forum for approval, Superintending Engineer Highways Ghulam Nabi said on Thursday.

He said the tendering process would begin once approval was granted, adding that the project included acquisition of 45 kanals of land, compensation for affected structures and relocation of utility services. Around 24,000 vehicles travel on Vehari Road daily, highlighting the importance of the project.

The details were shared during a review meeting chaired by Commissioner Multan Aamir Kareem Khan to examine the project’s design and proposed improvements in line with the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The commissioner directed that road widening, road structure, shoulders, central median, carpeting and overlay be completed according to the approved project design. He also called for improvements to major intersections, including Chowk Shahbaz, through wider junctions, slip roads and turning lanes to ensure smoother traffic flow.

He directed the relevant authorities to examine safe U-turns and alternative traffic arrangements at key intersections in accordance with traffic engineering principles.

The commissioner stressed the inclusion of an efficient drainage system and footpaths in the project. He said the central median and green belts along Vehari Road would be developed through plantation, horticultural work and installation of modern streetlights.

He further directed that appropriate lighting angles and the future growth of trees be considered while installing streetlights.

The commissioner also called for beautification plans for Mumtazabad, Chowk Shahbaz and other major intersections, including monuments and designs reflecting the city’s identity. He directed the authorities to explore possibilities for improving existing green spaces and the linear park along Vehari Road.

He emphasised that the project design should integrate traffic requirements, public convenience and the beautification of Multan.
