Vehicle emission testing underway in Sargodha to curb air pollution

District

SARGODHA:Vehicle emission testing and the issuance of fitness stickers are underway in Sargodha district under the Punjab government’s environmental policy aimed at controlling vehicular emissions and reducing air pollution.

Chief Executive Officer Auto Unit Chaudhry Muhammad Adnan told the media here on Thursday that a testing centre had been established opposite the District Council building, where vehicles were inspected for engine performance and smoke emissions.

Vehicles meeting the prescribed environmental standards were issued fitness certificates and stickers, he said.

Adnan said tokens were issued daily from 9am to 10am to facilitate vehicle owners, who were then assigned specific testing times to avoid long waits. The centre operates from 9am to 9pm and tests around 150 vehicles daily, he added.

He said the entire testing process was computerised, with modern equipment connected to vehicles’ engines and exhaust systems to assess emissions and engine performance against prescribed technical standards.

During testing, engines were operated at speeds of approximately 2,300 to 3,000 revolutions per minute (RPM). Vehicles emitting excessive smoke or failing to meet the required standards were not issued fitness certificates, he said.

Adnan added that vehicle registration details and other relevant information were entered into the online system, which automatically calculated the testing fee. The fee was Rs500 for vehicles with engine capacities ranging from 600cc to 1,000cc and Rs800 for vehicles up to 1,500cc.

He urged citizens to have their vehicles tested on time and maintain them in accordance with environmental standards to help reduce air pollution and ensure compliance with the Punjab government’s environmental policy.
