HYDERABAD:While terming Sindh Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2021, as an unconstitutional act, Jamat-e-Islami Sindh has announced to launch protest movement against it from December 3.

Addressing a press conference here at Hyderabad press club on Tuesday, provincial Emir Jamat-e- Islami Sindh Muhammad Hussain Mehanti said Jamat -e- Islami will observe a black day across the province on Friday (December 3) and rally will be organized in Karachi on December 12 (Sunday) to record strong protest against the bill which he termed an anti people legislation.

The Article 140-A of the constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, clearly states that the objective of the local government was to empower elected representatives politically, financially and administratively but Sindh Govt had deprived LG system of their core functions and authorities, Muhammad Hussain Mehanti maintained.

He said the provincial government of Pakistan People’s party (PPP) had slashed powers of the local government institutions and after passage of this bill these institutions could not issue death and the birth certificates while control of the basic health units, dispensaries and hospitals had been taken back from local government institutions.

Sindh Government has taken over the control of Abassi Shaheed hospital, Karachi Medical and Dental College, Karachi Water Board and Wasa Hyderabad through passage of this bill, JI leader said.

He said the provincial government of PPP had usurped constitutional powers of the local government representatives and handed their authorities to the bureaucrats.

He said Jamat-e-Islami will strongly oppose this move which is against the basic essence of the constitution.

Muhammad Hussain Mehanti demanded for taking decision back and with the consultation of the opposition new bill should be approved.

He also demanded of the federal government and the judiciary to take notice of the unconstitutional step of the provincial government failing which strong protest movement will be launched across the province.

Provincial Deputy General Secretary of Jamat -e- Islami Sindh Abdul Waheed Qureshi, Hafiz Tahir Majeed Sardar Zubair Solangi, Mujahid Chana, district Emir Aqeel Ahmed Khan and others were present on the occasion.
