ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) to form committees and sub-committees to resolve disputes with the K-electric.
A two-member SC bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial heard the suit for recovery/Rendition of Accounts between KMC and K-electric.
During the course of proceedings, the bench stated that committees and sub-committees should permanently resolve revenue generation, issues of KMC.
Justice Bandial said that the Supreme Court was hearing cases to resolve legal issues, not listening to disputes between institutions.
Additional Advocate General Sindh said that Sindh government paid Rs 433 million to K-Electric on Supreme Court orders. Justice Bandial said that it was KMC’s responsibility to pay energy bills to K-electric.
He said that the KMC had to generate its own revenue. KMC and K-electric should work together to resolve their issues, he added.
He said that KMC and K-electric were not doing their job. The KMC could advise K-electric to build better transmission lines.
The counsel for K-electric said that his client had asked KMC to install street lights which automatically on and off.
He said that even after the Sindh government’s payment of Rs 433 million to K-electric, Rs 936 million remained over dues.
Justice Bandial said that there was no legal point in the present case, only court time was being wasted. KMC did not know how much it owed, he added.
Justice Bandial said that the court was not here to solve money and business problems. Unfortunately, the condition of municipal corporations in the country was not satisfactory, he added.
He said that Capital Development Authority’s (CDAs) revenue was low and now the authority was in surplus. He said that no one wanted darkness in a city like Karachi.
He said that KMC and K-electric should solve their disputes permanently. Later, hearing of the case was adjourned for two weeks.
