Kohat: District Police Officer (DPO) Shehbaz Elahi awarded commendation certificates to SHO Jarma Iqbal Khan and SHO KDA Umar Khaliq Khan for their exceptional performance in crime control, professional conduct, and public service.

Speaking on the occasion, DPO Shehbaz Elahi praised both officers for their dedication and effective policing, noting that recognizing excellence not only encourages capable officers but also sets a positive example for others.

He emphasized that officers who work diligently for crime eradication, peace maintenance, and timely justice will always be appreciated. The DPO urged them to continue serving with integrity and professionalism to ensure the safety of citizens’ lives and property.

In a separate event, a farewell ceremony was held in honour of DSP Nazir Hussain, who was promoted to SP Operations and transferred to District Karak. The ceremony was attended by senior police officials, including SP Headquarters, SP City, SP Saddar, and other staff members.

Muzaffargarh: Scores of daily-wage labourers have demanded fpr setting up proper labour points with basic facilities as they have to wait for people for many hours to be hired by them at different locations in the city.

Daily wagers including masons, painters and other labourers told reporter one spot falls on a busy road housing Danish Boys High School, Danish Girls High School, Government Women’s College, the District Headquarters Hospital, Police Lines and the District Health Office, resulting in constant traffic pressure due to the movement of students, patients, ambulances, government employees and citizens. They said labourers standing along the roadside further disrupt the flow of traffic.

The workers said they are forced to wait for employment under open sky in scorching heat, rain and cold, with no shed, seating, clean drinking water or washroom facilities available at the site. They said that on many days they fail to find work and return home empty-handed after waiting the entire day.

They urged the Punjab chief minister, the Muzaffargarh deputy commissioner, the district administration and elected public representatives to establish proper labour points at various locations across the city, equipped with shaded shelters, clean drinking water, seating arrangements, washrooms and other basic facilities, so that workers can wait for employment in a dignified environment while also easing traffic congestion in the city.

The labourers said Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched welfare initiatives for students, farmers, widows and people from various walks of life, and appealed to her to also address the problems of daily wage earners who work hard to earn an honest living.

Peshawar: The Awami National Party (ANP) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday termed the controversial law relating to journalists in the province as being against constitutional freedoms and freedom of the press.

In a statement, ANP KP Spokesperson Arsalan Khan Nazim said the law concerning restrictions on journalists and media amounted to a direct attack on democratic values, constitutional freedoms and press freedom.

He alleged that the legislation was aimed at curtailing the public’s right to information and discouraging criticism of the government’s performance.

The spokesperson further claimed that efforts to keep the law away from public and media scrutiny even after its approval reflected what he described as the government’s lack of transparency.

Arsalan Khan Nazim alleged that the law granted extraordinary powers to the Speaker to bar journalists from covering assembly proceedings, restrict the publication or broadcast of proceedings, and impose penalties, including imprisonment and fines, on journalists critical of the Speaker or the Assembly.

He said existing legal mechanisms were already available to address cases involving false reporting or distortion of facts, adding that introducing new criminal provisions to deal with journalists was unacceptable.

Calling for the immediate withdrawal of the law, the ANP spokesperson said the party would continue to support freedom of the press, democratic traditions and the public’s right to information.

He also urged journalists’ bodies, lawyers, civil society organisations, political parties and all democratic stakeholders to raise a united voice against the legislation.
