Gold rates increase by Rs.1,000 to Rs.273,600 per tola


Islamabad: The price of 24 karat per tola gold increased by Rs.1,000 and was traded at Rs.273,600 on Wednesday against its sale at Rs.272,600 on the last trading day, All Sindh Sarafa Jewellers Association reported.



The price of 10 grams of 24 karat gold increased by Rs.857 to Rs.234,568 from Rs.233,711 whereas that of 10 grams of 22 karat went up to Rs.215,021 from Rs.233,711.



Per tola and ten gram silver were sold at existing prices of Rs 3,350 and Rs.2,872.08 respectively.



The price of gold in the international market increased by $10 to $2,624 from $2,614, the Association reported.



KP Assembly proceedings adjourned due to lack of quorum


Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly proceedings, chaired by Speaker Babar Salim Swati on Wednesday, adjourned until January 13, at 2 p.m. due to lack of quorum.



The proceedings began with the recitation of the Quran. However, immediately after, an opposition member pointed out a lack of quorum. At that point, only 24 members were present in the House.



In response, the Speaker ordered to rung the bells for two minutes.



Once the session resumed, the required number of members for continuing the proceedings was still not met.



As a result, the Speaker adjourned the session until Monday at 2 p.m. January 13.



It is worth mentioning here that the provincial assembly proceedings was initially scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, but it was delayed by over four hours. This led to journalists in the press gallery boycotting the proceedings.



Lahore police arrest 58 individuals for aerial firing on near year night

Lahore: The police launched comprehensive operations against law violators on New Year's Night, taking decisive action to ensure public safety.

According to the a Police Spokesman, 58 individuals were arrested for aerial firing and 50 related cases were registered.

The spokesman revealed that during a crackdown on illegal weapons, 107 suspects were detained and 107 cases were lodged.

In an operation against one-wheelie, 63 violators were apprehended, leading to 58 case registrations. Additionally 27 individuals involved in fireworks were arrested, and 24 cases were filed against them.

Capital City Police Officer Bilal Siddique Kamyana expressed the satisfaction that foolproof security arrangements were implemented by the police on New Year's Night. He highlighted that the metropolis remained peaceful due to the Police's effective strategy. Public parks, recreational areas and public places were secured to ensure the safety of the families and the citizens, he said.

PMEX advances concept of innovation, market productivity in commodity market: CEO PMEX


Islamabad: Chief Executive Officer of Pakistan Mercantile Exchange (PMEX), Khurram Zafar on Wednesday said that PMEX wants to advance the concept of innovation and market productivity in the commodity market by increasing efficiency in agriculture and metal.



‘We are envisioning future markets under which market regulation will be maintained and competitiveness and productivity in the commodity market will be enhanced, ” Chief Executive Officer of Pakistan Mercantile Exchange (PMEX), Khurram Zafar told reporter in an exclusive interview.



He said that the exchange registered a trading volume of around Rs 3,800 billion in the current Fiscal Year.



CEO, PMEX said that Commodity futures are derivative contracts in which the purchaser agrees to buy or sell a specific quantity of a physical commodity at a specified price on a particular date in the future.



Derivatives are investments that derive their value from the price of another asset, typically called the underlying asset, he said.



He said that Pakistan Mercantile Exchange (PMEX) has a huge role in future market design and market economy on which the future market depends.



Talking to reporter, the CEO, PMEX said that the Market Eco-system and Storage are very important on which Pakistan Mercantile Exchange is working.



He said that there is a need to digitize the commodity market across the country, on which our institution is working on research and analytics.



Zafar said that digitization and automation are very important in the global capital market at this time and ‘we are working on creating the ecosystem of the commodity market and its role is important in the restoration and development of the country’s economy.’



The productivity factor in the Pakistani economy is low and more work needs to be done on it which is being followed by PMEX, he said.



The CEO, PMEX said that storage is very important in the commodity market and our organization is ready to provide facilities to the farmers, which will have a positive impact on our agricultural economy.



He said that currently countries’ economies are dependent on research and data, and the future economy is also dependent on this.



Zafar said that the government needs to collaborate with PMEX to modernize the market economy in Pakistan so that the country’s economy can move forward.



He said that the role of stakeholders is very important to bring competitiveness in the economy and to bring it into harmony with the global market.



Zafar said that PMEX is providing a good platform to integrate stakeholders in the agricultural economy.



Pakistan Mercantile Exchange Limited (PMEX) is the country’s first and only demutualized commodity futures exchange, licensed and regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), he said.



CEO PMEX said that based on sophisticated multi-dimensional infrastructure and state-of-the-art technology, PMEX offers a complete suite of services i.e. trading, clearing and settlement, custody as well as back office, all under one roof.



He said that PMEX, formerly National Commodity Exchange, initially started trading in Gold only and this listing was followed by the first gold physical delivery in later years.

Additional Products were subsequently launched – IRRI -6 rice in March 2008 Palm Olien futures in June 2008 and KIBOR and Crude Oil and Silver contracts were listed in 2009.



He said the Sugar contract was in 2011.



Finally, he said that the commodity market has its due potential to play an significant role in sustainable economic development of the country, for which coordination and integration of the local market is pivotal and PMEX is paying full attention in this regards



Khyber Teaching Hospital treated 1.77 Million Patients in 2024


Peshawar: Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH), one of the 2nd largest public sector healthcare facilities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, treated an impressive 1,775,532 patients in 2024.



Of these, 1,156,848 were attended to in the Accident and Emergency Department, while 618,684 received care in the Outpatient Department.



Additionally, 201,370 patients visited the hospital’s Institution-Based Practice (IBP) during evening hours, where 5,591 specialized procedures were performed.



According to KTH spokesperson, Sajjad Khan, the hospital conducted 39,651 surgeries and carried out 1,592,923 laboratory tests, 279,059 X-rays, 123,250 ultrasounds, 15,911 CT scans, and 8,925 MRIs in 2024.



KTH serves not only Peshawar and its surrounding districts but also the entire province and even patients from Afghanistan.



With a 1,600-bed capacity, it continues to play a critical role in providing advanced healthcare services to thousands daily.



In addition to its clinical achievements, KTH undertook significant developmental initiatives in 2024.



These includes, Installation of a high-end incinerator machine, donation of 80 motorized beds by UNHCR to enhance patient comfort, Installation of a 180 kW solar system for the Accident and Emergency Department and approval of a 1.5 MW Longi solarization project for the hospital.



FIA arrests four more human traffickers

Lahore: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Gujranwala Zone claimed on Wednesday to have arrested four criminals including a notorious human trafficker for their alleged involvement in Libya boat tragedy. According to FIA spokesperson, the suspects- Imran Hussain aka Mani, Muhammad Ijaz, Imran Saqib and Rizwan Khadim, involved in illegally sending innocent citizens abroad were arrested from various parts of Gujranwala and Gujrat. Imran Hussain aka Mani, a key figure in the Libya boat tragedy, had been listed among the most wanted human traffickers in the FIA's Red Book. He was a member of an international human trafficking syndicate, with six cases registered against him at the Composite Circle Gujrat. The spokesperson added that Imran extorted Rs 2.4 million from each of six victims of the Libya boat tragedy. He sent them from Pakistan to Egypt, Dubai, and then Libya on visit visas. In Libya, the victims were held in safe houses before being sent to Europe by boat. Tragically, all the victims perished in the boat accident. Another trafficker Muhammad Ijaz extorted 900 Euros and Rs 900,000 from a citizen by promising a job in Italy. Imran Saqib received Rs 3.7 million from the complainant, promising jobs in Germany for the victim's sons, but instead he sent them to Saudi Arabia. In Saudi Arabia, the victims were subjected to torture, and the traffickers continued to demand huge amount of money. Rizwan Khadim, another trafficker extorted Rs 2.7 million from a victim to send him to Spain for employment but failed to fulfill the promise. He then went into hiding after taking the money. The arrested individuals are under investigation. Raids were being conducted to arrest other suspects involved in the racket, he added. Director Gujranwala Zone Abdul Qadir Qamar said that all available resources were being utilized to apprehend the suspects.
