RAWALPINDI:Commissioner Rawalpindi Salman Ghani presided over a high-level meeting on water resources and supply management on Monday, directing executing departments to accelerate work on major dam projects on a war footing to bridge the city’s daily water deficit.
The meeting was attended by Director Development Nazarat Ali, Managing Director Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Azizullah Khan, senior officials from the Small Dams Organisation and relevant administrative departments.
Reviewing WASA Rawalpindi’s operational capacity, officials informed the chair that the city’s daily water demand stands at 72 million gallons per day (MGD), whereas current supply remains at 51 MGD, creating a daily deficit of 21 MGD.
To resolve the shortfall, Commissioner Ghani directed accelerated execution across key water supply schemes including Chahan Dam, Chhahan Dam, Dadhocha Dam and Rawal Dam in accordance with Punjab government directives.
The meeting was briefed that overall construction on Dadhocha Dam has reached 92 percent completion. Upon completion of its 28-kilometer transmission pipeline and water treatment plant, the project will supply 35 MGD of clean drinking water to Rawalpindi, with the complete network slated for completion by December 2029.
Concurrently, the water treatment and filtration plant for the Chhahan Dam project is targeted for completion by December 2027, which will benefit over 250,000 residents upon operationalization. Furthermore, under the WASA Master Plan, an additional 28 MGD will be routed to Rawalpindi from Chharah Dam.
Commissioner Salman Ghani instructed project directors to ensure timely completion of all bulk water supply initiatives to effectively secure the division against long-term water scarcity.
