Lahore: Preparations have been made to introduce new rules to completely eliminate child labor at brick kilns in Punjab and it has been decided to implement the Punjab Prohibition of Child Labor at Brick Kilns Rules 2026.
The Labor Department has sent draft of Child Labor at Brick Kilns Rules to the Punjab Cabinet for approval and after its approval, the new rules would be implemented immediately.
The proposed rules have suggested strict implementation of restrictions on employing children for brick kiln owners. In addition, a regular procedure for compiling and verifying records of workers and their children working at the kilns would also be part of the rules. The new system would have a clear procedure for verifying the age of children, preparing records and identifying child labor at the brick kilns. Labor inspectors would be tasked with regular inspections of kilns and taking action if children are found working.
Labor inspectors were also proposed to be given clear responsibilities for investigating complaints related to child labor, while the procedure for legal action in case of violation would be further clarified. The proposed rules suggest making the role of the district administration and labor department more effective in eliminating child labor, as well as including measures to run awareness campaigns about the harms of child labor.
