Pakistan expresses condolences over flood devastation in Libya
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan expressed condolences over losses caused by devastating floods in Libya, according to the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"The government and people of Pakistan extend heartfelt condolences to the people and the State of Libya on the devastation caused by the deadly floods in the northeastern part of Libya," the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
The loss of lives and sufferings endured by the survivors were deeply saddening, said the statement, adding that Pakistan and its people stand in solidarity with the Libyan people during the difficult time.
"Our embassy in Libya is monitoring the situation and is in contact with the local authorities for possible assistance and support to the community," it said.
Severe floods, triggered by Mediterranean storm Daniel, hit eastern Libya on Sunday.
At least 5,300 people were feared dead, said the eastern-based Interior Ministry on Tuesday, as emergency workers uncovered more than 1,500 bodies in the wreckage of Libya's eastern city of Derna on the same day.
