Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Commission (KPIC), in collaboration with Islamia College University Peshawar, on Monday celebrated International Day for Universal Access to Information with an awareness seminar, followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance the cause of open governance.
Chief Information Commissioner Syed Nazar Hussain Shah, Information Commissioner Arshad Ahmed and Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Ur Rehman graced the event, which was attended by faculty members, students and civil society representatives.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Information Commissioner said the RTI Act was a powerful tool to ensure transparency in the financial and administrative affairs of public institutions, combating corruption and promoting good governance.
He noted that citizens could access public information free of charge, enabling them to see how their tax money was being spent, and that an informed society strengthened trust in government and participatory democracy.
Director of Communication Sayed Saadat Jahan explained the procedure for seeking information from public bodies and highlighted the practical importance of the KP RTI Act for students in their academic pursuits, research and future careers.
Souvenirs and certificates were distributed among those who rendered outstanding services for RTI during the last year. The Vice Chancellor reiterated the university’s dedication to transparency and pledged full support for the objectives of the MoU.
