Karachi: Chairperson and Convener of the Senate Standing Committee on Water Resources Jam Saifullah Khan has categorically said that the Senate Standing Committee (SC) on Water Resources would make all those accountable who were involved in corruption in the K-IV project. He said that they were not satisfied with the Augmentation Project pertaining to K-IV.
While briefing the media persons after a meeting in the office of the Chief Engineer, K-IV Project, the Chairperson Senate Standing Committee Jam Saifullah Khan said that K-IV project was aimed at providing water to the metropolis and it had been going on for long period of time.
He said that the purpose of today’s meeting was to review the progress of the K-IV project and check that at which stage it stood so far. He said that a meeting was also held in May in which the Standing Committee had directed the officials concerned to accelerate the pace of work and remove shortcomings, weaknesses and bottlenecks, if any, in the K-IV project.
Senator Jam Saifullah said that the project had four different components including wapda, sindh transmission company and augmentation project. He said that the work on part of the wapda has improved and they have given assurance to complete their remaining work soon. He further said that the Irrigation authorities would also facilitate to supply water for the project.
The Chairperson said that the Standing Committee on Water Resources is not satisfied with Augmentation Project under which pipelines had to been laid down in the metropolis. He said, ‘We would continuously monitor this project and check it.’ Safifullah said that they had told them clearly that the Senate Standing Committee would take strict action against negligence and corruption in the project. He said that the Standing Committee would recommend those officers and contractors, who were found involved in the corruption, to the authorities concerned to make them accountable.
Replying to a question, he said, ‘We are aware of the importance of the project and it was a big project for the city. He said that the project had faced some challenges. He, on the occasion, also appeal to the apex court to reconsider its decision on such projects to complete them. Replying to another question regarding the completion of the K-IV project, he said, ‘Senate Standing Committee on Water Resources is not an executing authority. It is a oversight authority and we are trying to get the project completed soon.’ He said we have asked them (the authorities working on the project) to provide them a list of those involved in the corruption as they could be made accountable. Answering another question, he said that Federal and Sindh governments were desired to complete this project as soon as possible.
